Any commentator on these books has to meet the daunting challenge of history, chronology and archeology, as well as theology. It is practically impossible in a single work to treat all of these areas exhaustively, so that an author has to be selective. In the pages of this volume the reader will notice that while the historical story line of 1 and 2 Kings has been carefully followed, adequate but less space has been given to matters of chronology and archaeology. Detail on such matters can be found in works which specialize in those areas.Here the author's priorities lie elsewhere. At frequent intervals in these pages, Mr. McShane pauses to note how the principles, which emerge from a consideration of the inspired record of the ancient history of the kingdom of Israel, have a practical bearing upon Christian living in ;the present time. In line with his pervious work on the books of Samuel the author demonstrates how principles of assembly rule are likewise illustrated by the material of the Kings., this feature alone, which is not commonly found in expositions of 1 and 2 Kings, will give this volume a special place on the book shelf of the Old Testament student.
